Epidural/Selective Epidural Nerve Root Steroid Injections

Are given to relieve pain in the neck, arms, back or legs, via the cervical (neck), thoracic (upper back), lumbar (lower back), or caudal (tail bone) epidural space. The injection is not made into the spinal cord, but next to the nerves and/or into the epidural space, where the nerves leave the spinal cord and run out to the body. Hopefully, only one injection will be necessary, but sometimes 2 or 3 will be needed, for maximum pain relief. If the pain goes away, but returns in the future, additional epidural injections can be given, as needed up to six per year, to help relieve the pain.
